Meaning of Marriage

We often say to couples that  being married is more important than getting married. Right now, almost all of your efforts are focused on getting married. But what assures you’ll stay married, or that yours will be a marriage that is even more deeply satisfying than the thrill of your wedding day?

Have you ever stopped to consider how many things we do in life that require a license? There’s a course of study, a test, and if you pass it, a certification that licenses you to drive a car, teach, practice law, receive a military commission, sell real estate, cut hair, trade commodities and operate a business. You name it and there’s a licensing process for it. But for marriage, which is arguably the most intimate, enduring and therefore most challenging human endeavor, little more is required than to be of legal age, have two forms of ID and a check made out to the clerk of court to pay for your marriage license. The life tests will surely come – after you say “I do.” So how do you go from two people armed with a marriage license to becoming a deeply committed couple able to meet the challenges that are part of every marriage?

There’s a lot of truth in the saying, “if you don’t know where you are going, any road you take will get you there.” Because there is no magical power in the officiant’s declaration that you are husband and wife, if you’re going to enjoy the great gifts and purpose of marriage you’ll need to make a conscious decision to choose the road that will lead you to your goal. The world is full of armchair philosophers and marriage gurus to whom you can run for counsel in times of marital crisis. But why wait for the storms of life before you tend to the moorings of your marriage? This page offers you links to some of the best resources we know that will nurture you right now, “from this day forward.” Enjoy the journey. Want one of our coaches to help you? Contact us today.
